THE ADVENTURE

Gray whales spend the winter and spring months in various warm lagoons on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, where they give birth to their young. In these protected lagoons, they also engage in mating activities and occasionally use some areas for feeding. These magnificent mammals embark on one of the longest migratory routes of any mammal, covering 5,000 miles over the course of 2-3 months.

During our safari, we will spend 2 days visiting a lagoon on the pacific side, carefully choosing the best weather conditions for optimal gray whale watching.

To conclude this remarkable safari and gain a deeper understanding of this pristine place, we will explore the mountains and canyons while observing the stunning coasts from a different perspective. A mule safari will guide us through the culture and life of the ranchers of this area, providing access to very remote and wild places that would be nearly impossible to reach without the assistance of these docile and robust animals.

During our expedition in these mountains, we monitor wildlife with the help of locals and install camera traps. As part of this adventure, we will install a new camera trap to further our knowledge and, hopefully, collaborate in protecting this place and its rich biodiversity.

Our adventure begins in Loreto, a sheltered, usually calm and sun-drenched stretch of ocean nestled between mainland Mexico and the breathtakingly beautiful, serene deserts and mountains of the Baja California Sur peninsula.

Immersed in the company of the warm-hearted people of Baja, we’ll discover their unique culture in this remote and diverse part of the peninsula, along with the wildlife that call these sacred lands home. Our exploration will encompass both land and sea, allowing us to traverse on foot, by boat and even via mule safaris.

This special paradise attracts a multitude of great whale species that come here to nurse their young and feed in the warm and relatively predator-free waters. Among these visiting cetaceans are humpback whales, fin whales and blue whales, the largest animal to have ever lived on earth.

In these fleeting months of January, February and March of each year, magical moments can be lived in these waters. With the arrival of the whales, we also anticipate the presence of the top predator of our oceans, the orcas, as some of their ecotypes and families feed on mammals such as dolphins or whales.

Over the course of two days, we will embark on cruises and exploration, venturing through the coast and around the islands of the Loreto Marine Reserve, each resonating with names like Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat, Catalana and Coronado.
