An unforgettable expedition to the remote Pacific lagoons of Baja California, where you will have the rare opportunity to observe gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) in their natural habitat.
Departing from Loreto, this journey begins with a scenic drive in a 4x4 van, crossing expansive valleys teeming with birds of prey, including hawks and caracaras, as you make your way to the pristine coastal lagoons. Your expedition will be led by two seasoned guides, each with over 10 years of experience in whale-watching expeditions. Their deep knowledge on ecology will enrich your understanding of the gray whales’ complex behaviors and life cycle. In the lagoons, you’ll witness these majestic creatures engaging in essential activities such as mating, nursing their calves, feeding, and socializing.
Throughout the expedition, your guides will provide ecological insights into the gray whale's remarkable migration, one of the longest of any mammal. Every year, these whales travel over 10,000 miles from their feeding grounds in the Arctic to the warmer waters of Baja California to breed and give birth. You’ll learn about the ecological significance of the lagoons and the conservation efforts in place to protect this vulnerable species.
As we navigate these tranquil bays surrounded by mangroves, you’ll find yourself in one of the most productive ecosystems, home to an array of wildlife including birds, coyotes, crabs, sea lions and dolphins. This is a land of contrasts, where towering dunes meet the vibrant greens of mangroves, creating a stunning mosaic of colors and life.
Join us on our photo ID program for a deeply educational and awe-inspiring journey into one of the natural world's most extraordinary migrations.
